Juan was born and raised in the Dominican Republic, moved to the United States 8 years ago after completing 2 years of medical school with Instituto Tecnologico de Santo Domingo. After noticing the lack of resources available to him, limiting his ability to help those vulnerable patients in need, he felt the motivation to travel to a different country, with a different language, and a different culture to amplify his ability to help those patients who experience significant health disparities in our communities. Juan started working with WellSpan from 2015 until 2017, as a Physician Office Assistant with WellSpan/Philhaven Behavioral Health where he was able to experience the firsthand impact of aiding minorities with a similar cultural background or even a similar day-to-day lived experience in the community of York, PA. He Joined Penn State Harrisburg in 2017 as a part time student, working towards completing a Psychology Bachelor of Science degree. Juan is currently finishing his senior year and internship to graduate in Spring 2023. He rejoined WellSpan in August 2020 as a Contact Tracer, to be part of WellSpan’s efforts to tackle our biggest challenge in modern day history, COVID-19. This position armed him with new tools to reach vulnerable patients in our community who were being exposed to the virus. In 2021, he transitioned his employment to a full-time Medical Interpreter where he had the great opportunity to be part of WellSpan’s vaccination efforts by providing his services at WellSpan vaccination clinics; reaching out to local community church leaders; providing education at different churches; and building a contact sheet to reach those vulnerable patients in our community who were seeking to get immunized against COVID-19. Juan continues to work for WellSpan in his new role as the Community Outreach and Engagement Coordinator and participates in outreach, education, community engagement and vaccination efforts across the WellSpan service area.
